Riyom local government area is situated in Plateau state, North-central geopolitical zone of Nigeria and has its headquarters in the town of Riyom. The LGA shares boundaries with parts of Kaduna and Nasarawa states while the towns and villages that make up the LGA include Jal, Riyom, Dantse, Koroda, Rim, Gol, Danwal, and Kwakhwi. The current estimated population of Riyom LGA is put at 174,632 inhabitants with the LGA predominantly occupied by members of the Berom ethnic affiliation. The Berom language is extensively spoken in the LGA while the religions of Christianity and Islam are practiced in the area. A number of festivals such as the Nzem festival are held in Riyom LGA.
Riyom LGA occupies a total area of 807 square kilometres and has an average temperature of 28 degrees centigrade. The LGA has a landscape characterized by hills and rocks with the average humidity level in the area put at 49 percent.
Trade is an important feature of the economy of Riyom LGA with the area hosting several markets such as the Rim-dyem and the Makera village markets. The LGA is also renoened for its rich agricultural heritage with crops such as tomatoes, onions, salads and vegetables grown in substantially large quantities within the LGA. Other important economic activities in Riyom LGA include hunting, food processing, and leather works.
