Calabar municipal is a local government area in Cross river state, Southern Nigeria. The headquarters of the area are in the town of Calabar while the LGA features popular districts such as Etta Agbo, Satelite town, and Ekorinim. Calabar Municipal is bordered by the Kwa and the Calabar Rivers and also by the Odukpani and the Calabar south LGAs. The population of Calabar municipal LGA is estimated at 187,432 inhabitants with the majority of the area’s dwellers being members of the Efik and the Qua ethnic divisions. Christianity is the widely practiced religion in the LGA while the Efik, Qua, and English languages are commonly spoken in the area. Popular festivals held in Calabar Municipal LGA include the widely acclaimed annual Calabar Carnival.
Calabar Municipal LGA covers a total area of 142 square kilometres and has a number of rivers and tributaries flowing within its territory. The dry and the rainy seasons are the two seasons witnessed in the area with the average temperature of the LGA pegged at 25 degrees centigrade.
Farming is a key economic activity in the Calabar Municipal LGA with the area being home to the Calabar Municipal Council Farms limited which is a 337 hectares center for agricultural research and cultivation of crops such as cassava and oil palm. Other important economic activities in the area include fishing, hunting, blacksmithing and trade with the area being home to several markets such as the Marian Market and the Uwanse market.
