Yakurr

Yakurr local government area is situated in Cross River state, South-south geopolitical zone of Nigeria. The headquarters of the LGA are in the town of Ugep and the LGA shares boundaries with the Biase, Abi, Obubra, and Akamkpa LGAs. Towns and villages that make up Yakurr LGA include Ugep, Mkpani, Nko, Inyima, Ekori, Idomi, Agoi Efreke, Ibami Assign, and Ntan. The estimated population of Yakurr LGA is put at 195,338 inhabitants with the area predominantly occupied by members of the Yako ethnic group. The Lokaa language is commonly spoken in the LGA while the religions of Christianity and Islam are widely practiced in the area. Prominent traditional rulers in Yakurr LGA include the Obol Lopon of Ugep while the festivals held in the area include the Leboku and the New Yam festivals. Notable landmarks in Yakurr LGA include the Ekori cave.

Yakurr LGA has an average temperature of 25 degrees centigrade and has several rivers such as the Kosanmah River flowing through its territory. The LGA hosts vast forest reserves with the area having an estimated total precipitation of 2950 mm of rainfall per annum. Average wind speed in Yakurr LGA is put at 10 km/h.

ECONOMY OF YAKURR

Farming is an important economic activity in Yakurr LGA with crops such as okro, maize, pumpkin, cashew, rubber, and plantain grown in the area. A number of mineral resources such as kaolin and quartzite are also found in Yakurr LGA. Other important occupations of the people of Yakurr LGA include fishing, trade, lumbering, wood carving, craftsmaking, and food processing.
