Etung

Etung local government area is located within Cross river state, South-south geopolitical zone of Nigeria with the headquarters of the LGA domiciled in the town of Effraya. Etung local government area shares boundaries with the Republic of Cameroon and with the Ikom, Obubra, and theAkamkpa LGAs. A number of towns and villages make up the Etung LGA and these include Abijang, Nsofang, Itaka, Effraya, Etomi, Mkpot, Agbokim, and Ajassor. The estimated population of Etung LGA is put at 124,556 inhabitants with the majority of the area’s inhabitants being members of the Ejagham tribal sub-division. The widely spoken language in Etung LGA is the Etung dialect of the Ejagham language while Christianity and traditional religion are the commonly practiced religions in the area. Notable landmarks in the Etung LGA include the Cocoa research Institute of Nigeria.

GEOGRAPHY OF ETUNG

Etung LGA covers a total area of 815 square kilometres and witnesses two distinct seasons which are the rainy and the dry seasons. The Cross River flows through the area with the average temperature of the area put at 25 degrees centigrade. The average annual rainfall in the Etung LGA is measured at 3700 mm.

ECONOMY OF ETUNG

Farming is a key economic activity in Etung local government area with crops such as plantain, cassava, maize, oil palm, and cocoa grown in the area. Etung LGA is reputed for being one of the highest producers of cocoa in Nigeria. Fishing is another important economic activity in Etung LGA with the area’s rivers and tributaries being rich in seafood. Etung LGA has lakes that are rich in Salt with large quantities of salt for consumption and industrial purposes produced in the LGA while the area also hosts several markets where a wide variety of commodities are bought and sold.

Etung LGA was created in the year 1996 from the Ikom local government area.
