Awgu

Awgu local government area is found in Enugu state which is situated within the Southeast geopolitical enclave of Nigeria. The headquarters of the area is in the town of Awgu and comprises a number of towns and villages which include Agbogugu, Isu awa, Mmaku, Obeagu, Mgbidi, Nkwe, and Mgbowo. Awgu LGA shares borders with Udi, Nkanu, Oji LGAs in Enugu state and the Isochi local government area of Abia state. The area is home to the Igbo ethnic division with the Igbo and English languages spoken extensively within the area.

The Egbeleli of Awgu is the traditional ruler of the area while Christianity and traditional religion are commonly practiced in Awgu LGA. The population of Awgu LGA is estimated at 161,053 with the area featuring a number of landmarks which include the National Youth Service Orientation camp and the Enugu state college of Education.

GEOGRAPHY OF AWGU

Awgu local government area features litters of hills with some measuring up to 300 meters. The area falls under the Guinea Savannah vegetation zone and has two main seasons which are the rainy and dry seasons with a brief cameo by the harmattan winds making a brief cameo in the dry season. The humidity of Awgu is estimated at 69 percent with the average temperature pegged at 28 degrees centigrade.

ECONOMY OF AWGU

Awgu LGA has a rich agricultural heritage with crops such as yam, cassava, and cocoyam grown in large quantities. The area is also known for its high quality palm wine with palm wine tapping as a major economic engagement of the area’s inhabitants. Trade is also a key source of livelihood in Awgu with the area having a number of markets which include the Orie Awgu and the Oye markets.
