Udenu

Udenu local government area is one of the seventeen LGAs that make up Enugu state, South-east geopolitical zone of Nigeria. The headquarters of the LGA are in the town of Obollo-Afor with the LGA sharing boundaries with the Nsukka LGA. The towns and villages that make up Udenu LGA include Amalla, Obollo-Afor, Iheakpu, Isi-enu, Ajorogwu, Udunedem, Orba, and Umu Egali. The estimated population of Udenu LGA is put at 194,503 inhabitants with the area majorly occupied by members of the Igbo ethnic group. The Igbo language is prevalently spoken in the LGA while the religion of Christianity is the most practiced in the area. Important festivals held in Udenu LGA include the Onwa-Ebo and the Akatakpa festivals while notable landmarks in the area include the Community Secondary School, Ezimo Uno and the Boys High School, Orba.

GEOGRAPHY OF UDENU

Udenu LGA covers a total area of 248 square kilometres and has an average temperature of 27 degrees centigrade. The LGA hosts a number of hills with the average humidity level in the area put at 57 percent. 

ECONOMY OF UDENU

Farming is an important economic activity engaged in by the people of Udenu LGA with crops such as yam, cassava, maize, bambara nuts and vegetables grown in the LGA. Trade also flourishes in Udenu LGA with the area hosting a number of markets such as the Obollo-Afor and the Orie Orba International markets which attract thousands of buyers and sellers of diverse commodities. Other important economic activities engaged in by the people of Udenu LGA include the making and sales of the popular Okpa delicacy which is a key feature in the cuisine of the area’s residents. 

HISTORY OF UDENU

Udenu LGA was first created in the year 1981 from the Isi-uzo LGA.
