About Ofu Local Government Area (L.G.A)

Ofu local government area is situated in Kogi state, North-central geopolitical zone of Nigeria and has its headquarters in the town of Ogwolawo. Towns and villages that make up Ofu LGA include Ajoda, Ogwolawo, Walawo, Ogwa, Itobe, Utagidi, Okotete, and Olofu. The current estimated population of Ofu LGA is put at 247,930 inhabitants with the area mostly inhabited by members of the Igala tribe. The Igala language is commonly spoken in the area while the religions of Christianity and Islam are practiced in the area. A number of colourful festivals are celebrated in Ofu LGA and these include the popular Italo festival.


GEOGRAPHY OF OFU

Ofu LGA occupies a total area of 1,680 square kilometres and has an average temperature of 29 degrees centigrade. The LGA lies off the shores of the Niger River and has an estimated total precipitation level of 1800 mm of rainfall per annum. Ofu LGA witnesses two major seasons which are the dry and the rainy seasons.


ECONOMY OF OFU

Ofu LGA has a rich agricultural heritage and is known for the cultivation of a number of crops such as rice, yam, and maize. Trade also blossoms in Ofu LGA with the area hosting several markets which provide platforms for the exchange of a variety of goods and services. Ofu LGA is also popular for the rearing of a number of domestic animals such as cows and rams.

HISTORY OF OFU

Ofu LGA was created on the 11th of May, 1989.
