About Giwa Local Government Area (L.G.A)

Giwa local government area is in Kaduna state, Northwest Nigeria and has its headquarters in the town of Giwa. Giwa LGA shares borders with Funtua, Birnin Gwari, Igabi, Dandune, and Sabuwa LGAs. Several towns and villages make up Giwa LGA and these include Shika, Kidandan, Galadimawa, Kakangi, Kadage, Idasu, Panhauya, and Danmahawayi.  The estimated population of Giwa LGA is 204,668 inhabitants with the most prominent tribes in the area being the Hausa and the Fulani. The Hausa and Fufulde languages are widely spoken in Giwa LGA while the religions of Islam and Christianity are commonly practiced in the area. Notable landmarks in Giwa LGA include the Giwa hospital and the Giwa barracks.


GEOGRAPHY OF GIWA

Giwa LGA occupies a total area of 2,066 square kilometres and witnesses two major seasons which are the dry and the rainy seasons. The average temperature of the LGA is 34 degrees centigrade while the total precipitation in the area is at an average of 1100 mm of rainfall per annum.


ECONOMY OF GIWA

Farming is a major occupation of the people of Giwa LGA. A number of crops such as onions, tomatoes, cucumbers, and water melons are grown in the area. A number of animals such as cows and rams are also reared in the area. Trade is another critical feature of the economic life of Giwa LGA with the area hosting several markets such as the Giwa main market where a variety of items are bought and sold by the dwellers of the area.

HISTORY OF GIWA

Giwa local government area was created on the 15th day of September in the year 1991.
