Suru

Suru local government area is situated in Kebbi state, North-west geopolitical zone of Nigeria. The headquarters of the LGA are in the town of Dakingari with the LGA comprising of a number of towns and villages such as Bakuwai, Dakingari, Giro, Ginga, Tanikwara, Shema, Sangelu, and Gwafadi. The estimated population of Suru LGA is put at 176,112 inhabitants with the area predominantly occupied by members of the Fulani ethnic group. The Fufulde language is commonly spoken in the LGA while the religion of Islam is extensively practiced in the area. Popular festivals celebrated in Suru LGA include the Hottungo Cultural festival while notable landmarks in the area include the NYSC permanent Orientation Camp.

GEOGRAPHY OF SURU

Suru LGA sits on a total area of 1,352 square kilometres and has an average temperature of 33 degrees centigrade. The LGA experiences two major seasons which are the dry and the rainy seasons with the average humidity level in the area put at 27 percent.

ECONOMY OF SURU

Agriculture is the mainstay of the people of Suru LGA with the area known for the cultivation of crops such as rice, guineacorn, soybeans, and beans. The rearing and sales of a wide variety of domestic animals such as rams and cows also take place in Suru LGA. Other important economic enterprises engaged in by the people of Suru LGA include trade, crafts making, and welding.

HISTORY OF SURU

Suru LGA was created in the year 1991 from the Bura LGA.
