Njaba

Njaba local government area is one of the twenty-seven LGAs found in Imo state, South-east Nigeria. Njaba LGA is bordered by the Oru East, Isu, Orlu, Mbaitoli, and Nkwerre LGAs. The headquarters of the LGA are in the town of Nnenasa and the LGA comprises of several towns and villages such as Amazano, Egwedu, Attah, Ibelle, Achara, Isiozi, Umuaka, and Ugbelle. The estimated population of Njaba LGA is put at 173,608 inhabitants with the majority of the area’s dwellers being members of the Igbo ethnic group. The Igbo language is commonly spoken in Njaba LGA while the religion of Christianity is practiced in the area. Notable landmarks in Njaba LGA include the Shrine of the revered Njaba diety which houses the sacred Eke Njaba.

GEOGRAPHY OF NJABA

Njaba LGA covers a total area of 84 square kilometres and has an average temperature of 27 degreed centigrade. The LGA falls under the Tropical Rainforest zone and has the popular Njaba River flowing through the area. Njaba LGA witnesses two distinct seasons which are the dry and the rainy seasons.

ECONOMY OF NJABA

Trade is an important feature of the economy of Njaba LGA with the area hosting several markets such as the Afor Umuaka and the Eke Umuezukwe markets where a wide variety of commodities are bought and sold. Farming is also a key occupation of the area’s populace with crops such as yam, cassava, cocoyam, and oil palm grown in the area.

Njaba LGA was created on the 4th of February 1991 from the Isu LGA.
