Ohaji/egbema

Ohaji Egbema local government area is one of the twenty-seven LGAs in Imo state, South-east geopolitical zone of Nigeria. The headquarters of the LGA are in the town of Mmahu Egbema and the LGA shares boundaries with the Owerri and Oguta LGAs and with parts of Rivers state. Towns and villages that make up Ohaji Egbema LGA include Umunkakwu, Opuoma, Assa, Ohoba, Ekugba, Mmahu, Obiakpu, and Abaezi. The estimated population Ohaji Egbema LGA is put at 249,851 inhabitants with the majority of the area’s populace made up of members of the Igbo ethnic group. The Igbo language is commonly spoken in the area while the religion of Christianity is widely practiced in the LGA. The traditional administrator of the Ohaji Egbema LGA is referred to as the Nze Obi while the Iri ji and the Ike Ihiri festivals are some of the festivals celebrated in Ohaji Egbema LGA. Notable landmarks in the area include the Adapalm oil palm plantation and the Ohaji Rubber Estate Obitti.

Ohaji Egbema LGA covers a total area of 890 square kilometres and has an average temperature of 26 degrees centigrade. Parts of the LGA are heavily forested with several rivers and tributaries flowing within the LGA’s territories. Average humidity level in Ohaji Egbema LGA is put at 72 percent while average wind speed is estimated to be around 12 km/h.

ECONOMY OF OHAJI/EGBEMA

There are vast deposits of crude oil and natural gas in Ohaji Egbema LGA with the area hosting several local and international oil companies. The LGA is also a hub for agricultural practices with crops such as oil palm, yam, maize and cassava grown in large quantities within the area. Other important economic activities undertaken by dwellers of Ohaji Egbema LGA include lumbering, fishing, hunting, and trade.

Ohaji Egbema LGA was created on the 27th of August 1991.
