Oguta

Oguta local government area is situated in Imo state, South-east geopolitical zone of Nigeria. The headquarters of the LGA are in the town of Oguta and the LGA comprises of several towns and villages which include Ogwunna, Umuajoma, Oguta, Orsu Obodo, Egwe, Egguoma, Awa,and Ezi orsu. The current estimated population of Oguta LGA is put at 186,703 inhabitants with the vast majority of the area’s dwellers being members of the Igbo ethnic group. The Igbo language is commonly spoken in the LGA while the religion of Christianity is extensively practiced in the area. A number of colourful festivals are held in Oguta LGA and these include the Omerife festival. Notable landmarks in Oguta LGA include the Oguta Lake Holiday Resort and the shrine of the Uhamiri goddess.

GEOGRAPHY OF OGUTA

Oguta LGA hosts the popular Oguta lake with the average temperature in the LGA put at 26 degrees centigrade. The LGA experiences two distinct seasons which are the dry and the rainy seasons with the total precipitation in the area put at an estimated 2400 mm of rainfall per annum.

ECONOMY OF OGUTA

Oguta LGA is rich in reserves of crude oil and natural gas and the activities of oil mining firms in the area contribute massively to the economy of the LGA. Tourism is another important source of revenue generation for Oguta LGA with the Oguta Lake and other tourist attractions in the area attracting an infux of tourists and fun seekers into the area. Other important economic activities indulged in by the people of Oguta LGA include farming, fishing, and trade.
