The headquarters of the LGA are in the town of Makurdi and consists of several districts and villages. Makurdi LGA shares boundaries with the Guma and Gwer west LGAs and with parts of Nasarawa state. The current estimated population of Makurdi LGA is put at 401,762 inhabitants with the area hosting members of diverse ethnic affiliations. The Tiv and English languages are spoken in Makurdi LGA while the religions of Islam and Christianity are practiced in the LGA. Makurdi LGA hosts the Makurdi town which is the capital city of Benue state.
