Makurdi

Makurdi local government area is domiciled in Benue state, Northcentral geopolitical zone of Nigeria. The headquarters of the LGA are in the town of Makurdi and consists of several districts and villages. Makurdi LGA shares boundaries with the Guma and Gwer west LGAs and with parts of Nasarawa state. The current estimated population of Makurdi LGA is put at 401,762 inhabitants with the area hosting members of diverse ethnic affiliations. The Tiv and English languages are spoken in Makurdi LGA while the religions of Islam and Christianity are practiced in the LGA. Makurdi LGA hosts the Makurdi town which is the capital city of Benue state.

Makurdi LGA covers a total area of 36 square kilometres and has an average temperature of 29 degrees centigrade. The River Benue flows through the LGA with the area having an estimated total precipitation of 61 percent.

ECONOMY OF MAKURDI

Makurdi LGA has a rich agricultural heritage and is known for the cultivation of a number of crops such as yam, cassava, groundnut, soyabeans, and a variety of fruits. The LGA is also rich in mineral deposits such as limestone, salt, and Barite. Makurdi LGA also hosts several banks, hotels, government agencies, industries, and relaxation spots.

HISTORY OF MAKURDI

Makurdi LGA was created in the year 1970.
