Ushongo local government area is found in Benue state, North-central geopolitical zone of Nigeria.The headquarters of the LGA are in the town of Lessel and the LGA is bordered by the Gboko, Buruku, Vandekiya, Kwande, and konshisha LGAs. Towns and villages that constitute Ushongo LGA include Mbayegh, Mbakuha, Mbagba, Atirkyese, Mbagir, Mbakuta, Mbaaka, and Anwo Gbor. The current estimated population of Ushongo LGA is put at 214,357 inhabitants with the area primarily populated by members of the Tiv ethnic group. The Tiv language is commonly spoken in the LGA while the religion of Christianity is the most practiced in the area.
Ushongo LGA has covers a total area of 1,228 square kilometres and has an average temperature of 30 degrees centigrade. The LGA hosts the popular Ushongo hills from which the LGA derives its names. Average wind speed in Ushongo LGA is put at 11 km/h.
Farming is the major occupation of the people of Ushongo LGA with crops such as citrus fruits, mangoes, grains, and tubers grown in large quantities within the LGA. A number of mineral reasources are also deposited in Ushongo LGA and these include Barite, Marble, and Clay. Other important economic activities engaged in by the people of Ushongo LGA include pottery, hunting, trade, wood carving, and food processing.
