Ikere

Ikere local government area is situated in Ekiti state, Southwest geopolitical zone of Nigeria. The headquarters of the LGA are in the town of Ikere-Ekiti with the LGA being bordered by the Ise/Orun, Ado, Iju/Itaogbolu, and Akure north LGAs. Towns and villages that make up Ikere LGA include Okejegbende, Oniroba, Aso-Osolo, Atoka, Aba Igbira, Ugbo-oje, and Ugbo-Uro. The estimated population of Ikere LGA is 111, 613 inhabitants with the vast majority of the area’s dwellers being members of the Yoruba ethnic group. The Yoruba language is widely spoken in the area while Christianity and Islam are the commonly practiced in the area. The Ogoga of Ikere-Ekiti is a rominent traditional ruler in the area while notable landmarks in the LGA include the College of Education Ikere-ekiti and the Ikere Dam.

GEOGRAPHY OF IKERE

Ikere LGA covers a total area of 202 square kilometres and is characterized by a number of hills such as the Orole and Olorunta hills. The average temperature of the area is 27 degrees centigrade while the total precipitation level of the area is put at 1850 mm of rainfall per annum.

ECONOMY OF IKERE

Ikere LGA is an agrarian community with the area known for the cultivation of a number of crops such as maize, okro, oil palm, yam and cassava. There are also several markets in the LGA which provide platforms for the exchange of a variety of goods and services. Other important economic activities in Ikere LGA include tailoring, blacksmithing, and the rearing of domestic animals.
