Irepodun / Ifelodun

Irepodun/Ifelodun local government area is situated in Ekiti state, Southwest Nigeria and has its headquarters in the town of Igede. The LGA is made up of several towns and villages such as Igede-ekiti, Iyin-ekiti, Igbemo-ekiti, and Awo-ekiti. The estimated population of the area is 174,335 inhabitants with the LGA’s dwellers majorly comprising of members of the Yoruba etnic group. The Yoruba language is predominantly spoken in Irepodun/Ifelodun LGA with Christianity as the most practiced religion in the area. A number of prominent traditional rulers can be found in Irepodun/Ifelodun LGA and these include the Onigede of Igede while popular festivals held in the LGA include the Iromo and the Oodun festivals. Notable landmarks in Irepodun /ifelodun LGA include the Ekiti state Women development and Skills acquisition Centre and the Okunsusi high School.

Irepodun/Ifelodun LGA sits on a total area of 356 square kilometres and has an average temperature of 27 degrees centigrade. The area has a number of hills which include the Esu Hills. The average humidity level of Irepodun/Ifelodun LGA is 69 percent while the area hosts several rivers and tributaries which include the Osun, Orunro, and Elemi rivers.

ECONOMY OF IREPODUN / IFELODUN

Trade is a prominent feature of the economic life of Irepodun/Ifelodun with the area hosting several markets such as the Fayose, Oba, and the Atiba markets. Farming is also an important economic activity in Irepodun/Ifelodun with crops such as cocoa, kolanut, banana, cocoyam, and vegetables grown in the area. Lumbering also thrives in the LGA with a number of saw mill industries situated within the area.

Irepodun/Ifelodun LGA was created on the 11th day of June 1989 from Ekiti central LGA.
