Essien Udim

Essien Udim local government area is in Akwa Ibom state, Southsouth geopolitical zone of Nigeria. The headquarters of the LGA are in the town of Afaha kot Ebak while the towns and villages that make up the LGA include Ikpe Annang, Ibam, Ikot Ntuen, Udok, Okon, Ikot Oko, Ikot Ukeh Etor, Ikot Ekefre, and Nto Okpo. Essien Udim LGA has an estimated population of 79,444 inhabitants with the majority of the area’s populace being members of the Affang ethnic sub-division. The Affang language is widely spoken in the area while Christianity is the most practiced religion in the LGA. Popular landmarks in Essien Udim LGA include the Sunshine Battery Industry in Ukana Ikot Ide and the Akan Ikot Okoro confluence.

ECONOMY OF ESSIEN UDIM

Essien Udim LGA is rich in crude oil and natural gas and as such the area hosts several local and foreign oil companies. Fishing is also a very popular enterprise in Essien Udim LGA with the area’s rivers and tributaries being rich in seafood. Other important economic engagements in Essien Udim LGA include farming, trade, making of bricks and ceramics, making of raffia baskets, hats and mats,  and the making of fishing nets and canoes. Crops grown in Essien Udim LGA include oil palm, cassava, and rubber while the markets in the area include the Obo Annang market.

Essien Udim LGA was created in the year 1989 from the Ikot Ekpene LGA.
