Biu

Biu local government area is situated within Borno state, Northeast Nigeria. The headquarters of the area are in the town of Biu and comprises several towns and villages which include Buratai, Garubula, Sabon layi, Zara, Wuyo, Waka, Dula, and Charengi. Biu LGA is home to the prestigious Biu Emirate with the Emir of Biu superintending over the area’s traditional affairs. Biu local government area is home to several tribal divisions with the most populous ethnic groups in the area being the Fulani and the Babur. The Babur and Fufulde languages are widely spoken in the area while the commonly practiced religion in Biu LGA is Islam. Popular landmarks in Biu LGA include the Tila lake, and the palace of the Emir of Biu.

GEOGRAPHY OF BIU

Biu LGA lies on the Biu plateau and has an elevation of 624 meters above sea level. The area falls within both the Northern Guinea Savannah and the Sudan Savannah regions.  Biu has a semi-arid climate and with an average temperature of 32 degrees centigrade. The humidity level of the area is put at 14 percent while the LGA features two distinct seasons which are the dry and rainy seasons.

ECONOMY OF BIU

A number of mineral resources such as Iron ore, Salt, Feldspar, and Topaz are found in Biu LGA. Agriculture is also an important economic activity for the inhabitants of Biu LGA with crops such as sorghum, millet, cotton, and cowpea cultivated in substantially large quantities within the area. The rearing of animals such as cattle, goats and donkeys can be seen within Biu LGA while trade is also an important engagement in the area with the LGA being home to several markets.
