Gwoza

Gwoza local government area is in Borno state, Northeast Nigeria and has its headquarters in the town of Gwoza. The LGA is made up of several towns and villages such as Kirawa, Pulka, Ashigashiya, Ngoshe, Gwoza, Amuda, Barawa, Joghode, and Vale. Gwoza LGA is home to the prestigious Gwoza Emirate and boasts an estimated population of 156,347 inhabitants with the majority of the area’s inhabitants being members of the Hausa, Kanuri and the Fulani ethnic groups. The Hausa, Kanuri and the Fufulde languages are commonly spoken in the area while Islam and Christianity are the widely practiced religions in the LGA.

GEOGRAPHY OF GWOZA

Gwoza LGA covers a total area of 2,883 square kilometres and has a landscape characterized by rocky and hilly terrains. The LGA hosts the popular Gwoza hills and the Mandara Mountains. Gwoza LGA has an elevation of 1,300 meters above sea level while the average humidity level of the LGA is 20 percent.

ECONOMY OF GWOZA

Farming is a key economic activity in Gwoza LGA with the area known for the cultivation of a variety of crops. Animal rearing is also an important economic enterprise in Gwoza LGA with several animals reared and sold in the area. The area also has a booming trade sector with the LGA hosting several markets where a variety of commodities are bought and sold. In recent times however, Gwoza LGA has been adversely affected by the nefarious activities of the Islamic sect; Boko Haram. The terrorist group has wrecked serious havoc in Gwoza LGA leading to loss of lives and property and to the dwindling of the economy of the area.
