Chibok

Chibok local government area is located within Borno state in the Northeast geopolitical zone of Nigeria with the headquarters of the area residing in the town of Chibok. Chibok LGA shares borders with the Damboa LGA and comprises of several towns and villages which include Bwalagyang, Piyemi, Mbalala, Garu, Gatamwarwa, Whuntaku,forfor, and Chibok. The major tribes in the area include the Kibaku and the Hausa while Christianity is the major religious affiliation of the area’s dwellers. The commonly spoken languages in Chibok include theKibaku and Hausa languages. Chibok LGA is part of the Borno Emirate and has a population of 171,991 inhabitants.

GEOGRAPHY OF CHIBOK

Chibok LGA witnesses two major seasons which are the dry and the rainy seasons. The average temperature of the area is 33 degrees centigrade while the humidity level of the area is at 19 percent. The wind speed of the area averages 10 km/h.

ECONOMY OF CHIBOK

Farming is a key economic activity in the Chibok LGA with a variety of crops grown in the area. The other important economic activities that take place in the area include hunting, animal rearing, pottery and trade. The LGA is home to several markets such as the Chibok market where a variety of commodities are bought and sold.

HISTORY OF CHIBOK

Chibok LGA recently gained international prominence following the abduction of over 200 schoolgirls from a secondary school in Chibok town by the dreaded Islamic sect, Boko Haram. On the 6th of May, 2017, 82 of the girls were released following the payment of ransoms by the Nigerian government and the release of a number of captured commanders of the Islamic sect. Efforts are still being made to secure the release of the remaining girls.
