About Kurmi Local Government Area (L.G.A)

Kurmi local government area is in Taraba state, North-central geopolitical enclave of Nigeria. The headquarters of the LGA are in the town of Ba’issa. Kurmi LGA is bordered by the Donga, Sardauna, Bali,and Ussa LGAs and also by parts of Cameroon. Towns and villages that make up Kurmi LGA include Abong, Akoferi, Karanuwa, Gwanda, Tigon, Nyido, Dogo, and Bangara. The estimated population of Kurmi LGA is put at 129, 648 inhabitants with the area mostly inhabited by members of the Ndola ethnic group. The Ndola language is widely spoken in the area while the religions of Christianity and Islam are widely practiced in the LGA.


GEOGRAPHY OF KURMI

Kurmi LGA sits on a total area of 4353 square kilometres and has an average temperature of 30 degrees centigrade. The area is heavily forested and has an estimated elevation of 265 meters above sea level. The area’s landscape is characterized by a litter of mountains and waterfalls. The average wind speed in Kurmi LGA is put at an estimate of 12 km/h.


ECONOMY OF KURMI

Kurmi LGA has a rich agricultural heritage with crops such as banana, plantain, rice, groundnut, and maize grown in large quantities within the area. A number of minerals such as gemstones are found in Kurmi LGA. Trade also blossoms in the area with the LGA hosting a number of markets where a large number of commodities are bought and sold. Other important economic activities in Kurmi LGA include hunting, lumbering, and cattle rearing.

HISTORY OF KURMI

Kurmi LGA was created in the month of October 1996.
