About Lau Local Government Area (L.G.A)

Lau local government area is domiciled in Taraba state, North-central Nigeria and has its headquarters in the town of Lau. Lau LGA is bordered by the Ardokola, Jalingo, Yono, and Zing LGAs and by parts of Adamawa state. Towns that make up Lau LGA include Lau, Kunini, Gowe, Abbare, Karlahi, Lainde, Jimlari, and Donadda. The estimated population of Lau LGA is put at 169,303 inhabitants with the area’s populace mostly made up of people from the Hausa and the Fulani ethnic groups. The Hausa and the Fufulde languages are commonly spoken in Lau LGA while the religion of Islam is widely practiced in the area. The Sarkin Lau is the paramount traditional ruler in Lau LGA.


GEOGRAPHY OF LAU

Lau LGA covers a total area of 1660 square kilometres and has an average temperature of 29 degrees centigrade. The LGA is heavily forested and lies off the shores of the Benue River. The total precipitation of Lau LGA is put at 1100 mm of rainfall per annum while the average wind speed in the area is put at 11 km/h.


ECONOMY OF LAU

Agriculture is the major occupation of the people of Lau LGA with crops such as yam, millet, guineacorn, and groundnut grown in the area. A number of minerals such as Lead, limestone, barite, and salt are also found in the LGA. Other important economic activities in Lau LGA include fishing and hunting.

HISTORY OF LAU

Lau LGA was created in the year 1991.
