Illela

Illela local government area is in Sokoto state which is situated in the Northwest geopolitical zone of Nigeria. The headquarters of the LGA are in the town of Illela with the LGA sharing an international border with the Niger Republic. Towns and villages that make up Illela LGA include Gidan Hamma, Kalmalo, Tozai, Gadan, Dango, Araba, Ketti, Tarke, and Damba. The estimated population of Illela LGA is 135,098 inhabitants with the majority of the area’s dwellers being members of the Hausa and the Fulani ethnic groups. The Hausa language is extensively spoken in the area while the religion of Islam is widely practiced in the area.

Illela LGA covers a total area of 1,246 square kilometres and has an annual average temperature of 34 degrees centigrade. The area witnesses two major seasons which are the dry and the rainy seasons with the latter lasting for lesser periods than the former. The average humidity of Illela LGA is 26 percent.

Illela LGA hosts the very popular Illela international border market where a wide variety of commodities are bought and sold. Also, a number of animals are reared in Illela LGA and these include horses, rams, and cows. Farming is another important feature of the economic life of Illela with crops such as guineacorn, millet, sorghum and rice grown in substantially large quantities within the area.
